Prof. Andrei V. Metrikine

Andrei Metrikine holds the chair of Dynamics of Solids and Structures at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. He is also Head of Section of Offshore Engineering and Head of Department of Engineering Structures within the same faculty. He also serves as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Sound and Vibration.

Andrei has graduated from the faculty of radio-physics at the State University of Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia in 1989. Thereafter, he joined the Mechanical Engineering Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and in 1992 he received a PhD degree in theoretical mechanics from the State Technical University of Saint Petersburg, Russia. In 1994-1998 he held a number of post-doctoral positions, including one in the Institute for Mechanics of the Hannover University, Germany awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. In 1998 he received a Doctor of Sciences degree in mechanics of solids from the Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering RAS, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Since 1999 Andrei is a member of staff of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of TU Delft.

 

Andrei’s research is focused on vibrations of and waves in structures that are in contact with solids and fluids. The main application areas of Andrei’s research currently are (i) dynamics of offshore wind turbines and (ii) dynamics of high-speed railway lines.

THE ROLE OF MACHINE LEARNING IN ENGINEERING DIAGNOSTICS

Dr. C. Nataraj (Nat) is the Moritz Endowed Distinguished Professor in Engineered Systems and the Founding Director of the Villanova Center for Analytics of Dynamic Systems (http://vcads.org) at Villanova University.  He has been Chair of Mechanical Engineering, and the founding Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics & Control (CENDAC). Nat has developed and taught over 23 courses and has been a university runner up for the Outstanding Teaching Award.

He has published a text book and 240+ peer-reviewed papers in dynamic systems, is a Life Fellow of ASME, the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Vibration Engineering Technologies and serves on the editorial board of three other international journals including Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing and Nonlinear Dynamics.  Nat’s current research interests are in the intersection of physics-based engineering and machine learning with applications to mechanical, electromechanical and biomedical systems.  He has received research funding from ONR, DARPA, NSF and NIH. Nat is the winner of the Villanova Outstanding Research Award. His research has received media attention including a TEDx talk, and  articles in Wired, Forbes and US News and World Report.  Nat is the founder and host of Nodycast, the world’s first and only podcast on Nonlinear Dynamics.

RAILWAY INDUCED VIBRATION IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Prof. Geert Degrande

Geert Degrande is professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of KU Leuven in Belgium. He obtained his master and PhD degree in 1986 and 1992 from KU Leuven. He was a visiting researcher at Princeton University in 1989 and postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Centrale de Paris in 1994. He became assistant professor in 1995 and full professor in 2005. He was head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 2008 until 2016 and presently is head of the Structural Mechanics Section. He teaches courses on theory of elasticity and plasticity, dynamics of structures, wave propagation and vibration in the built environment and non-linear structural analysis.

Geert Degrande's main research interests are structural dynamics, dynamic soil-structure interaction, elastodynamics, computational mechanics, and inverse problems. Emphasis is going to vibration problems in the built environment due to traffic, industry and construction activities, using both numerical and experimental techniques. He is (co-)author of over 100 peer reviewed journal papers and over 250 papers in proceedings of (inter)national conferences. He is subject editor for the Journal of Sound and Vibration (2010-) and serves in the editorial board of Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (2009-), International Journal of Railway Technology (2012-), Railway Engineering Science (2019-), Transportation Engineering (2020-), and Transportation Geotechnics (2021-). He was co-chair of the 8th International Conference on Structural Dynamics (Eurodyn 2011) in Leuven, Belgium and chair of the 13th International Workshop on Railway Noise (IWRN13) in Ghent, Belgium.

Prof. Marian Wiercigroch FRSE

Professor Marian Wiercigroch educated in Poland, US and UK holds a Sixth Century Chair in Applied Dynamics and he is a founding director of the Centre for Applied Dynamics Research at the University of Aberdeen.

 

His area of research is theoretical and experimental nonlinear dynamics, which he applies to various engineering problems. Wiercigroch has published extensively (over 400 journal and conference papers) and sits on a dozen editorial boards of peer review journals. He is the Editor-In-Chief of International Journal of Mechanical Sciences and a frequent keynote and plenary speaker at major international conferences.

 

He is the inventor of new patented drilling technology called Resonance Enhanced Drilling and the Founder and Chief Technology Officer of a spinoff company iVDynamics Ltd.  He has established in Aberdeen unique experimental laboratories allowing to investigate complex nonlinear dynamic interactions in mechanical systems with the focus on energy generation.  

 

He has received many awards and distinctions including a Senior Fulbright Scholarship (1994), Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2009), DSc honoris causa by the Lodz University of Technology (2013), Distinguished Professorships at the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (2017), Balseiro Institute (2018) and Yanshan University (2021), a Scottish Champion of Knowledge Exchange (2020) and has been a panelist of the Research Excellence Framework (2014, 2021) assessing quality of research in the UK.

VIBRATION OF FLEXIBLE ROBOT

Dr. Debanik Roy

Dr. Debanik Roy has 30 years of research experience in the domain of Robotics, Automation, Artificial Intelligence & Intelligent Manufacturing Systems. Dr. Roy is a gold-medalist, both at his Bachelor of Engg. as well as Master of Technology curricula, respectively from Jadavour University, Kolkata, India and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. On completion of his overseas research sojourn in Singapore, Dr. Roy has been associated with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India since 1999, primarily with the Robotics division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. Dr. Roy is also serving as an adjunct Professor faculty of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) since 2009.

Dr. Roy has attained many professional benchmarks, including best technical paper prize, membership of IEEE, honorary membership of technical committee on robotics of IASTED, Canada, overseas visiting professorship, mentorship of resesarch programmes, senate membership, guest speaker at various international conferences etc. He is associated as editorial board member of several international journals in robotics & automation and computational mathematics. Dr. Roy has bagged two patents on innovative design of mechatronic systems, has authored over 150 papers in referred journals and conference proceedings, two books on applications of robotics and ten book-chapters on robotic gripper and sensor fusion. In 2014, Dr. Roy received the DAE Award for Excellence in Science & Technology.

Dr. Roy has been nominated as member of the Programme Advisory Committee of the Science & Engineering Research Board of Department of Science & Technology (DST-SERB), Govt. of India in 2018 and again in 2020; member of the Technical Advisory Committee of Gujarat State Council on Science & Technology (GUJCOST), Gujarat, India in 2019; member of the Task Force Committee on EMEQ, DST-SERB, Govt. of India in 2019; member of the Project Review & Steering Group, Autonomous Last Mile Vehicle (ALIVE) Project under Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), Govt. of India in 2020 and member of the selection committee of SERB-‘POWER’ scheme of project approval for women scientists & technologists of India in 2020.

 Dr. Roy and his research team at PDPM Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing-Jabalpur have secured the first prize for innovating a novel process of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming at International Forming Technology Exhibition, “IMTEX Forming-2016” held at Bengaluru, India. Marquis Who’s Who in the World, USA has conferred ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Dr. Roy in 2018 for his outstanding scholastic excellence in the field of robotics, automation & manufacturing.

MACHINE INTELLIGENCE BASED RESEARCH IN SOLVING VIBRATION PROBLEMS

Prof. Snehashish Chakraverty

Prof. S. Chakraverty is a Senior (Higher Administrative Grade) Professor in the Department of Mathematics (Applied Mathematics Group), National Institute of Technology Rourkela, Odisha. Prior to this, he was with CSIR-Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, India. He did M.Sc. (Mathematics), M. Phil. (Computer Applications) and Ph. D. (1993) from IIT Roorkee. Thereafter he did post-doctoral research at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, U.K. and at the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Concordia University, Canada. He was also a visiting professor at Concordia and McGill universities, Canada and visiting professor of University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He has authored/co-authored 23 books, published 386 research in journals and conferences and two books are ongoing. He is the Chief Editor of International Journal of Fuzzy Computation and Modelling, Inderscience Publisher, Switzerland, Associate Editor of Computational Methods in Structural Engineering, Frontiers in Built Environment and belongs to the Editorial Board of several other journals and book series.

He was the President of the Section of Mathematical Sciences (including Statistics) of “Indian Science Congress” (2015-2016) and the Vice President – “Orissa Mathematical Society” (2011-2013). Prof. Chakraverty is a recipient of prestigious awards viz. Indian National Science Academy (INSA) nomination under International Collaboration/Bilateral Exchange Program (with the Czech Republic), Platinum Jubilee ISCA Lecture Award (2014), CSIR Young Scientist Award (1997), BOYSCAST Fellow (DST), UCOST Young Scientist Award (2007, 2008), Golden Jubilee Director’s (CBRI) Award (2001), Roorkee University Gold Medals (1987, 1988) for first positions in M.Sc. and M. Phil. (Comp. Appl.) etc.

He is in the list of 2% world scientists (2020) in Artificial Intelligence & Image Processing category based on an independent study done by Stanford University scientists.

He has supervised nineteen Ph. D. students and twelve are ongoing. Prof. Chakraverty undertaken around 16 research projects as Principle Investigator funded by international and national agencies totaling about Rs.1.6 crores. He has hoisted around 8 international students with different international/national fellowships to work in his group as PDF, PhD, visiting researchers for different periods. His present research area includes Differential Equations (Ordinary, Partial and Fractional), Numerical Analysis and Computational Methods, Structural Dynamics (FGM, Nano) and Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical and Uncertainty Modeling, Soft Computing and Machine Intelligence (Artificial Neural Network, Fuzzy, Interval and Affine Computations).
